Course of the game
As expected, Straubing started with a lot of energy, but the Red Bulls held their own from the start and were initially the team that dominated the game. Yasin Ehliz had the first top chance, but Hunter Miska defused the solo effort (4.). On the subsequent power play, the Munich team continued to apply pressure, but the Tigers' goalkeeper was able to save the next good scoring opportunities for the Red Bulls. On the other side, Mathias Niederberger shone against Parker Tuomie (7th). The game continued to go back and forth at a high tempo. Both teams created more great chances, but the two strong goalies kept their goals clean in the first period.
In the middle period, it didn't take long before a Straubinger had to go to the cooler (23rd). Eleven seconds later, Ortega slammed the puck into the net for 1:0 (24). The Red Bulls kept the pressure on and added their second goal through Ehliz (28th). There was little to see from the Tigers offense until then, but the Red Bulls' momentum was interrupted by a penalty. Straubing thus got back into the game better and had their first chances - including a goal on the crossbar by Matt Bradley (31st). Then the derby action was completely turned upside down within a few minutes: Mark Zengerle (33rd), Matt Bradley (35th) and Nicolas Mattinen (37th) turned the game around with their goals and gave the home side a 3:2 lead after two periods.
The Red Bulls started the final period with a lot of pressure and had the first top chance after a few seconds through Jonathon Blum. In return, Mattinen hit the crossbar on a 2-on-1 attack (41st). The Tigers were now looking for counterattacks, while coach Toni Söderholm's team pressed for the equalizer with a lot of possession. Ben Street had the biggest chance, but Miska saved in the highest emergency (52.) - and was not to be beaten in the following. In the 58th minute, Cole Fonstad's counterattack made it 4:2.
