Course of the game
Munich got off to an energetic start in their first derby of the season, but the first goal came from Straubing: Justin Scott scored in the fifth minute to make it 1:0 for the hosts. The Red Bulls survived the Tigers' subsequent pressure phase thanks to concentrated defensive work and struck themselves in their first powerplay: DeSousa hammered the puck straight into the Straubing net after Jonathon Blum's pass (16'). Munich took the lead three-and-a-half minutes later. Hirose made it 2:1 at the break after a wonderful assist from Veit Oswald.
Second period, second minute, second goal for DeSousa: The Canadian put the disc into the corner of the net to make it 3:1 for Munich (22.). The Red Bulls created some good chances in the rest of the third period and controlled the game. Until the 33rd minute, when JC Lipon reduced the deficit to 2:3 for Straubing after a long pass. However, EHC Red Bull Munich went into the second break with a 4:2 lead: Four seconds before the siren, Hirose also scored a brace after a speedy combination.
Straubing set out in the final period with determination and offense in search of the final goal. However, Munich goalie Mathias Niederberger was just as unimpressed as his teammates. For their part, the Red Bulls repeatedly appeared dangerous in front of the Tigers' goal. Toni Söderholm's team sealed the deal in the final minute thanks to two empty-net goals from DeSousa, who completed his hat-trick, and Kastner.
