Course of the match
In the duel between the two top teams, defensive formations dominated to begin with. The fans therefore had to wait just under eight minutes for the first big chance. Munich goalkeeper Evan Fitzpatrick then stopped the solo run of DEL top scorer Ty Ronning. Jonathon Blum showed great vision and crossed for Varejcka, who gave Munich the lead with a powerful shot (10'). The Red Bulls now increased the pressure and had another high-caliber chance through Les Lancaster (14th), before Berlin became more dangerous again in the final phase of the third period. However, there was no further goal before the first break.
After the break, the game continued with pace and tough duels, but initially little happened in front of goal. That changed in a crazy 27th minute. Ronning gave Fitzpatrick no chance with a hard and well-placed shot. However, the Red Bulls had the perfect response: Kastner put Munich back in front just ten seconds after equalizing. Both teams then played forward, but the score remained unchanged before the break.
The game continued with hard field hockey and many highlights, such as the spectacular individual action by Munich's Chris DeSousa (42'). However, the next goal fell into the "goal of the will" category, as Ronning dusted off a rebound to make it 2:2 (44'). The duel became increasingly heated and the Polar Bears' powerplay units were now allowed to show themselves several times. Leonhard Pföderl made the most of one of the opportunities in overtime to make it 3:2 for the visitors (51'). The Red Bulls then repeatedly attacked the box of the reigning champions. Because the Polar Bears' goalie Jonas Stettmer thwarted several high-calibre chances, the home side held on to their narrow lead.
