Course of the game
Iserlohn got off to a storming start and opened the scoring in the fourth minute through Tyler Boland. Munich goalkeeper Evan Fitzpatrick had no chance in his DEL debut. After the goal to make it 0:1, the Red Bulls also created chances to score, but they had to wait until the 17th minute for their first high-caliber goal. Taro Hirose took a direct shot, but Roosters goalkeeper Andreas Jenike prevented the equalizer (17.). The visitors went into the first break with a narrow lead.
In the middle period, both teams initially played a controlled game before the Red Bulls took over more of the play. Iserlohn continued to defend consistently and lay in wait for counter-attacks. Boland converted one of them while the Roosters were short-handed to make it 0:2 (35'). There was no further goal before the second break - also because the crossbar thwarted Munich's best chance after Eisenschmid's hammer shot (36').
Iserlohn also offered little in the final period, but the Red Bulls made it exciting once again: Eisenschmid made it 1:2 after Patrick Hager's assist (48'). Munich then established itself in the offensive zone for several minutes, but despite good chances, the second goal was not scored. When Jackson brought on an extra skater in the final period in overtime, Eric Cornel sealed the deal at the other end with his empty-net goal to make it 1:3 (58').
