Course of the game
Zug's Mike Künzle tested Mathias Niederberger after just a few seconds, who was wide awake right from the start and defused the first Swiss chance. The Red Bulls then took control - and it paid off in the fourth minute: Kastner scored to make it 1:0 after preparatory work by Andreas Eder. Rieder had the second goal on his stick after a solo run, but this time EVZ goalkeeper Tim Wolf was on the spot. The Swiss improved midway through the first period. Niederberger was called upon to make several good saves, but he was unable to prevent Künzle from equalizing (13'). Shortly before the end of the third period, Munich increased the pressure once again. Because Adam Brooks only hit the outside of the net, the teams went into the first break tied at 1:1.
Zug set the tone in the middle period. The Swiss played with pressure and turned the game around completely with three more goals. First Fredrik Olofsson scored on the rebound in the 24th minute to make it 1-2. Munich had the chance to equalize through Brooks on a 3-on-1 counter-attack (32'), but the next goal came a little later on the other side: Daniel Vozenilek made it 1-3 after a solo run (33'). Colin Lindemann increased the lead to 1:4 in the 38th minute - which was also the score after 40 minutes.
Zug took the momentum into the final period, but Niederberger and the post prevented a higher deficit. The Red Bulls then created some good opportunities: Kastner and Les Lancaster still failed to beat Wolf, before Rieder reduced the deficit to 2:4 with his first goal in a Munich jersey (52nd). However, Lukas Bengtsson restored the gap just three minutes later (55'). The Red Bulls sent their powerplay units onto the ice once more in the final period, but the result remained unchanged.
