Gameplay
A little bit of feeling out? No, both teams went at it from the first second on with many checks and high speed. Then it got really spectacular from minute seven with two Cologne powerplays including 20 seconds of double overtime: The Sharks fired from all positions, Munich defended strongly with many blocks and an outstanding goalie Mathias Niederberger. So it remained 0-0 - and because both teams continued to act consistently on the defensive, the score did not change until the first intermission.
In the middle period, it took only three and a half minutes to score the first goal. Street scored in the last second of the power play to make it 1:0 for Munich. In the following, Cologne pressed vehemently for the equalizer, the Red Bulls allowed little - until shortly after the end of the fourth overtime game of the Sharks: Alexandre Grenier did not hit the disc correctly, but it deflected into the goal for 1-1 (34th). And Cologne even managed to take the lead when Andreas Thuresson placed the puck from the blue line exactly next to the right post (38th). With a 2-1 for the guests, it went into the second period break.
Red Bull München tried everything again in the final period. But the Sharks struck again: Grenier's hammer landed in the Munich net (45th). Shortly after, Maximilian Kammerer added the 4:1 (47.). The champions now exerted more pressure to reduce the deficit. Cologne's defense held, however, and Brady Austin increased the lead to 5:1 (55.). On the power play, Smith scored the final goal to make it 2:5 (58.).
