We take a closer look at the three participants - starting with the Växjö Lakers. Four championship titles since their promotion in 2011 make the Lakers the most successful Swedish club in recent history. Växjö last won the SHL title in 2023 - last season they even reached the play-off semi-finals. Our new signing Tobias Rieder was there both times.
Rieder warns against former club Växjö: ‘One of the top teams in Europe’
He is therefore the perfect insider for the club from southern Sweden and knows: ‘They are very good on the disc, very strong in terms of running and very structured. They also have a super experienced former player in Jörgen Jönsson as their coach.’ Jönsson's squad includes several former NHL players - including the offensively strong defenceman and captain Joel Persson. Perhaps the Lakers' greatest strength, however, is the quality of their depth.
‘Jönsson consistently plays with four lines. That's also possible because the young players are highly trained,’ says Rieder. Added to this are strong imports such as Finnish international goalkeeper Emil Larmi. This mixture is what makes the Lakers so successful. For Rieder, they are ‘one of the top teams in Europe’. The Swedes want to prove this on their debut at the Red Bulls Salute.
