Course of the game
The Grizzlies got off to a lightning start: Wolfsburg's Spencer Machacek was allowed to celebrate his 1:0 in the second minute after video evidence. After that, the teams fought a hard-fought duel with few clear-cut opportunities. Wolfsburg showed more urge to score and Munich goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger was challenged several times. Towards the end of the third, his counterpart Dustin Strahlmeier also had to intervene twice. However, no further goals were scored in the first period, meaning the home side went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
The middle period brought many intense duels and few opportunities for the attackers on both sides to develop. But this time the Red Bulls were more determined and more dangerous than the Grizzlies. The result: Oswald netted his first goal of the season for Munich in the near corner to make it 1:1 (37'). The score remained the same after 40 minutes.
Last period, familiar picture: The two teams played a match on a knife's edge - and headed for overtime thanks to consistent defensive work. And after a goalless 20 minutes, it came to that. As nobody scored in overtime either, the game went to a penalty shoot-out. Here, Varejcka (65) secured the extra point for the four-time German champions Munich.
