Course of the match
Munich had to do without coach Max Kaltenhauser today. The 43-year-old was unable to stand behind the bench due to urgent personal reasons. Co-coach Pierre Allard and Manuel Latusa (coach of the Red Bull Ice Hockey Academy's U18 team) stood in for him and saw Mannheim get off to a lively start. The Adler opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a power-play goal from Daniel Fischbuch. The Kurpfalz team continued to play well after that, but Munich also had top chances. Brooks made the most of one of them, turning a solo effort into an ice-cold equalizer (15th). Shortly before the break, Tobias Rieder failed to beat Adler goalkeeper Arno Tiefensee in a similar situation (19'). On the counter-attack, Kristian Reichel's shot was deflected unstoppably (20'). Mannheim went into the first break with a 2:1 lead.
Munich started the middle period full of pressure, but Mannheim scored the next goal. Reichel was successful for the second time that evening (26') and increased the lead to 3:1. Tiefensee prevented the Red Bulls from replying quickly - among other things with a save against Brooks (28'). Both teams continued to play hard and at high speed. Despite good opportunities, however, no further goals were scored before the second break.
The Red Bulls stepped up their offense in the final period. The result was a clear increase in chances, but the disciplined Adler did not concede any high-caliber goals. Munich ran out of time. In the 58th minute, Allard and Latusa took Mathias Niederberger off the ice, but even with a sixth field player, Tiefensee could no longer be beaten. The decision was made 35 seconds before the final buzzer: Markus Hännikäinen sealed the deal with an empty-net goal to make it 4:1.
