Course of the game
Munich versus Mannheim: a duel between DEL heavyweights. The start to the latest edition was correspondingly furious. The Adler began aggressively and offensively, while the Red Bulls countered coolly and with concentration. From the middle of the third period onwards, the hosts gained an increasing advantage. The result: first Eder reacted quickest in front of the goal and scored in his 400th DEL game to make it 1:0 for Munich (13.). A minute later, Brooks scored alone in front of Mannheim goalie Felix Brückmann. Coach Kaltenhauser's team took this 2:0 lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes.
Both teams continued to play full-throttle ice hockey in the middle period. The Red Bulls were more determined: they defended passionately and attacked more dangerously than their guests. Munich youngster Simon Wolf (20), who was playing only his second DEL match, shone between the posts during the few phases of pressure from Mannheim. However, no goals were scored in this intense period, so that the score remained 2:0 for Munich at the second break.
The Adler really wanted to start the last 20 minutes with a goal. Wolf and his team-mates fought back with full commitment, but had to concede the 1:2 through Marc Michaelis in the 46th minute. Exactly 60 seconds later, Kris Bennett even managed to equalize. And the Red Bulls? They gave the perfect answer: In minute 48, Tobias Rieder brilliantly set up his team-mate Kastner, who converted to make it 3:2 for Munich. Six minutes later, Hirose restored the two-goal lead for the 2023 champions with his 4:2. When Adler goalkeeper Brückmann came off the ice for a sixth player in the 55th minute, Kastner increased the lead to 5:2 with his second goal into an empty net. Six men from Mannheim pulled back to 4:5 with a double strike from Daniel Fischbuch (58th) and Luke Esposito (59th). After 86 seconds of thrills, however, EHC Red Bull Munich celebrated their third home win in a row and climbed to third place in the DEL table.
