Course of the game
Munich looked to get on the offensive early on, while Nürnberg lurked for pinpricks. As both teams defended well, the game initially lacked any major opportunities. Nevertheless, goals were scored. In the tenth minute, Bittner's shot was deflected with a bit of luck to make it 1:0. Shortly afterwards, the Ice Tigers pressed for the equalizer in double overtime, but Niederberger and his teammates defended passionately. This was followed by the big highlight of the first period: Ehliz was served strongly in the slot, then played Eisenschmid into a great position and he finished the combination into the wide-open goal to make it 2:0 for Munich (18th). It stayed that way until the break.
After a quiet start, the middle period picked up speed with a Nürnberg power play. The Ice Tigers tested Niederberger several times (6th), but the goal came from the other end: Rieder converted a solo run ice-cold and made it 3:0 with his shorthander (27th). The game then went back and forth, with both teams creating chances. However, the goals were still only scored by one side. Ehliz gave Munich a 4:0 lead after 40 minutes with his precise finish (39').
The Red Bulls kept Nürnberg at bay in the final period. Only during a period of pressure from the Ice Tigers did the lead wobble (46'), but Niederberger was still unbeatable. His counterpart Leon Hungerecker had to intervene more often and prevented a possible fifth Munich goal by Adam Brooks (56.). However, no further goals were scored. The score remained 4:0 for the four-time German champions.
