This weekend, EHC Red Bull Munich will face Switzerland's top teams HC Davos and EV Zug in Sursee, Switzerland.Our team starts on Saturday at 19:30 against HC Davos, who lost 2:1 to Motor České Budějovice in the first game of the Lehner Cup on Thursday evening. The game against Zug is scheduled for Sunday at 4:00 pm. Konrad Abeltshauser has a premonition of what awaits the Red Bulls: "These are typical Swiss teams. They are very strong in terms of running and physicality." We introduce you to our opponents in more detail.
The record champion from the mountain town of Davos
No European town is situated as high as Davos (1,560 meters above sea level). And no ice hockey team has won the Swiss championship as often as the HCD. The Davos team has won the national title 31 times (!). The club is popular throughout the country. This has to do with its history, but also with characters like Andres Ambühl.
The 40-year-old striker was born in Davos and is a living club legend. Until brief stints in the American Hockey League and with the ZSC Lions, Ambühl always played for his home club. He has worn the "C" on his chest for ten years. He has been Swiss champion six times and won silver at the World Championships twice with the Swiss national team - most recently a few months ago.
The majority of the contingent players come from Sweden - including former NHL forwards Joakim Nordström and Simon Ryfors. Former NHL crack Josh Holden has been the coach since 2023. The Canadian gained his first coaching experience at EV Zug - our second opponent in Sursee.
The rise of EV Zug: class at all levels
EVZ is one of the most successful Swiss teams of recent years. The success story began with the installation of coach Dan Tangnes. The Norwegian took over the club in 2018 - and turned it into a top European team. Zug became Swiss champions in 2021 and 2022. In the past two seasons, they even made it to the play-off semi-finals.
EVZ has completely dispensed with North American contingent players. The imports come from Sweden and the Czech Republic. Captain Jan Kovar is one of them. The Czech is a top-class playmaker with a high ice hockey IQ. He was national champion in his home country, in Russia and in Switzerland, where he was also voted the most valuable player of the regular season and the playoffs.
Leonardo Genoni also received personal honors. The long-serving Swiss national goalkeeper has already won the Swiss Goalkeeper of the Year award six times. At the last World Championships, he made a decisive contribution to the "Nati" winning the silver medal. The more important the game, the better Genoni.
Abeltshauser: "This is exactly the kind of opponent we need"
Our boys know how good Zug is. The two teams have met eight times in the past six years. Abeltshauser has been on the ice in each of these duels - including our two victories. He is looking forward to the reunion and is convinced that the duels against Zug and Davos will not fail to have an effect: "This is exactly the kind of opponent we need to prepare for the start of the season in the best possible way."
