"We've had a good start to the season. We're brutally strong on the small ice surface," said Schwenningen's all-rounder Boaz Bassen recently on the club's own website. Small ice surface? Indeed: because the Helios Arena is played on NHL ice.

After the arena renovation in 2020, the playing surface will measure 60 meters long and 26 meters wide instead of the usual 60 x 30 meters in Europe. This naturally requires a certain amount of adjustment for every opposing team.

But the Schwarzwald team has also recently recorded a win away from home. On Thursday, the Wild Wings came from 2:0 down to win 4:3 after overtime in Wolfsburg. Top scorer Alexander Karachun (eleven goals, six assists) did not score, but other forwards were on hand.
