Derby time: Red Bulls visit Augsburg
Thursday, 23. November 2023 | DEL preview: EHC Red Bull Munich visit Augsburg
Derby time: Red Bulls visit AugsburgWinning streak against Panther to continue// DEL - PRELIMINARY REPORTLess than 48 hours after the Champions League game in Geneva, EHC Red Bull Munich is back in action in the PENNY DEL: On Friday (19:30 | LIVE on our blog), the derby with the Augsburg Panthers is on the agenda.
Our team wants to get back on the road to success quickly after being eliminated in the CHL round of 16. "We have to stick more to our game plan again. The derby is a good opportunity," says our striker Veit Oswald. After all, success against our neighbors from Augsburg tastes particularly good. Our ice rink at Oberwiesenfeld and the Curt-Frenzel-Stadion are only 54 kilometers apart as the crow flies. In sporting terms, the distance was much greater last season. As you know, we were crowned champions, while the Panthers would have been relegated. Since the two finalists in DEL2 did not apply for a license for the upper house, Augsburg continues to play in League One. This means that at least four derbies against the Panthers are guaranteed this season. We won the first of these 5:1 - also thanks to Oswald, who was one of the scorers.

The Panthers' form curve points upwards
Since then, the Panthers have been more stable. Coach Christof Kreutzer's team has now played seven games, three of which they won - including against Mannheim. They suffered narrow 2:3 defeats against league leaders Berlin and the top four teams from Bremerhaven and Cologne. The performance was right, but not the result.
Finnish power and favorite Trevelyan
The offense stands and falls with the performances of newcomers Anrei Hakulinen and Jere Karjalainen. The Finnish duo lead the internal scorer list, with Hakulinen providing the assist (nine assists) and Karjalainen scoring (eight goals). The latter is also the target player in superior numbers (five goals). Further down the rankings is T.J. Trevelyan.
Nevertheless, the Canadian with a German passport is the absolute fan favorite. The now 39-year-old forward is playing his 13th season in a Panther jersey. He may not score as regularly as he did in his early days, but the fans understand that. He played 487 times for the Panthers in the DEL - only Steffen Tölzer (770 appearances) and Duanne Moeser (568) more often.

Derby record: All nine for the Red Bulls?
Trevelyan was one of the scorers in Augsburg's last derby win (5:4 n. V.). It was just over two years ago. Since then, the Red Bulls have dominated. Munich have won eight times in a row - including clear victories such as the 6:1 in their most recent visit to the Curt-Frenzel-Stadion. On Friday, we want to celebrate for the ninth time in a row. With Oswald among the scorers again? "I'll give it my all, of course. Maybe one will go in again."
