Course of the game
High tempo, cracking duels - the game was fun right from the start. Geneva got off to an attacking start, but the Red Bulls held their own and had the first high-caliber chance through Ben Street. However, Servette goalkeeper Robert Mayer was on the spot (5'). A little later, Mathias Niederberger defused Vincent Praplan's solo effort at the other end (6). The duel remained intense and full of chances. MacWilliam took advantage of one of the opportunities. The defender tucked the disc into the home side's goal eleven seconds before the break to give Munich the lead.
The Swiss champions increased the pressure in the middle period. The Red Bulls' defense was now challenged - and defended uncompromisingly. Geneva still had chances, but the post after Sami Vatanen's hammer (27') and Niederberger initially prevented the equalizer. The German goalkeeper then had no chance in the 36th minute. Teemu Hartikainen scored in overtime to make it 1:1 - the score after two periods.
Daniel Winnik opened the third period with a shot against the crossbar (41'). Geneva were also more compelling after that. In the 48th minute, the Swiss then put themselves on the winning track with a double strike: Josh Jooris bent a rebound over the line to make it 2:1, before Tanner Richard made it 3:1 shortly afterwards (51'). Munich braced themselves against elimination and pressed for the final goal with the extra outfield player, but Servette keeper Mayer could no longer be beaten.
