Course of the game
Ingolstadt was allowed to start early with a 5-on-3 superiority (3rd), but the Red Bulls defended cleverly and had - again completely - the first high-caliber goal of the derby: Andreas Eder put the puck against the crossbar coming from the penalty bench (5th). After that it was an open exchange of blows. Both teams bridged the neutral zone at breakneck speed and looked for the quick finish. This resulted in chances - including a huge opportunity from Trevor Parkes after a rebound off the post (20th). However, no goal was scored in the first period.
It took just 46 seconds in the middle period for Jan Nijenhuis to give the Panthers the lead. Ingolstadt were a little more active after that, but the Red Bulls also had strong offensive actions. Krämmer capitalized on one of them to equalize (32'). Because Munich goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger shone against Patrik Virta in the 34th minute, the teams went into the second break at 1:1.
The Red Bulls defended more aggressively in the final period. Ingolstadt initially found no means against the aggressive forecheck, but was efficient in front of goal. Marko Friedrich finished off one of the rare attacks to make it 2:1 (51'). Munich then increased the risk, while the Panthers waited for counter-attacks. Wojciech Stachowiak hit the post on one of them (56'). In the penultimate minute, coach Toni Söderholm introduced a sixth outfield player. The champions put on the pressure once more, but the result remained the same.
