Course of the game
Concentrated defensive formations characterized the game in the opening phase. Munich upped the tempo after five minutes. The Red Bulls now presented themselves as playful and with plenty of time in the offensive zone. Trevor Parkes had the first top chance, but Joseph Cannata in the Lions' goal made a save (7th). Two penalties only briefly slowed the German champions down. The visitors then took a well-deserved lead in the 18th minute: Hager capitalized on Maximilian Kastner's impressive assist after an exemplary counter-attack to make it 1:0 - the score after the first period.
Frankfurt pressed for the equalizer in the middle period, but the Red Bulls were ice-cold in front of goal. Smith made it 2:0 with a solo effort (24'). At the other end, Mathias Niederberger was able to distinguish himself several times. The German international goalkeeper prevented the Lions from scoring the final goal until the 30th minute. Then Carter Rowney shortened the gap with a rebound. However, the Red Bulls were unimpressed and delivered the perfect response: DeSousa scored with pinpoint accuracy (34') to restore Munich's two-goal lead.
The first exclamation mark in the final period came from the Lions. Rowney reduced the deficit to 2:3 with a powerplay goal (41'). The Hessians then went on the attack, but Munich defended cleverly and waited for counter-attacks. Oswald finished off one of them after a nice interplay with Kastner (48'). Because the Red Bulls controlled the game after that, the German champions held on to win 4:2.
