Course of the game
Munich got off to an offensive start and scored the first high-caliber goal after just a few seconds through Patrick Hager. But the Panthers also created opportunities. Alexander Oblinger capitalized on one of them to make it 0:1 (6'). The Red Bulls responded promptly. Just 19 seconds later, Blum scored from the blue line to make it 1:1. Both teams then played aggressively in front - and scored on the power play before the first break: Moritz Elias put the visitors back in front (15') before Ortega scored his 20th goal of the season to make it 2:2 at the break (19').
The Red Bulls took the momentum into the middle period, but AEV goalkeeper Markus Keller prevented Chris DeSousa (21) and Yasin Ehliz (22) from going behind. At the other end, Luca Tosto put the puck against the post (23). The Panthers then made the most of their chances: Matthew Puempel (25), Jere Karjalainen in the powerplay (35) and Mirko Sacher (36) gave Augsburg a 5:2 lead. The final goal in the second period was scored by Munich's Parkes to make it 3:5 (38').
In the final period, Munich initially opted for a controlled attack. Augsburg now under more and more pressure. However, the Red Bulls needed a stroke of genius from Ortega, who surprised Keller from behind the goal line to tie the score at 4:5 (49'). The German champions now pressed for the equalizer without neglecting their defence. Munich had plenty of chances, but Keller or the post (58') were the final straw. So it remained 4:5 from the Red Bulls' point of view.
