Course of the game
Following the emotional tribute to record-breaking player Kastner, both teams immediately went on the offensive. After an even opening few minutes, Munich created far more chances. However, the hosts' high-pressure play was rewarded just as little as the Penguins' pinpricks. The first 20 minutes remained goalless.
The Red Bulls in forward motion, Bremerhaven flawless in defense - this was also the picture initially presented in the middle period. The visitors became more dangerous as the game wore on, but Munich goalkeeper Simon Wolf kept a clean sheet. However, he had to let the puck pass in the 34th minute: Jan Urbas gave the Penguins a 1:0 lead from close range. The Red Bulls still had very good chances to equalize before the break, but they failed to take advantage of them. The score after 40 minutes was therefore 0:1.
The final period began with opportunities on both sides, including Chris DeSousa's second goal against the bar. Munich then put the visitors under increasing pressure. The defensive bulwark around Penguins keeper Maximilian Franzreb held for a long time - until Hirose netted. In the 54th minute, his well-deserved 1:1 equalizer for the Red Bulls sent the SAP Garden into overtime. As no goals were scored here, the penalty shoot-out decided a fiercely contested top duel: Cedric Schiemenz secured the extra point for Bremerhaven.
