Course of the game
The home side took control right from the first face-off. However, DEG goalie Henrik Haukeland was able to defuse the first minor chances and a great combination between Maximilian Kastner and Chris DeSousa (5th minute). The visitors then got themselves on the scoreboard with their first opportunity. Düsseldorf's top scorer Tyler Gaudet gave the Rheinländer the lead on the rebound in the 10th minute. An answer was not long in coming: Kastner took advantage of a defensive error by Düsseldorf a good three minutes later and found Krämmer in the opposing third. He welded the puck into the crease from close range to equalize the score at 1:1. For a long time it looked like a draw at the first break, but 27 seconds before the end of the third period Brendan O'Donnell gave the visitors another chance to celebrate with his goal to make it 2:1.
After the Red Bulls consistently defended away their first deficit at the start of the second period, the home side increasingly took control of the game again. However, the resulting chances by Markus Eisenschmid (24'), Patrick Hager (25') and Veit Oswald (27') did not prove compelling enough to overcome the strong Haukeland. Munich's dominance came to an end with short-handed situation number two, in which Düsseldorf managed to get a few shots on target again after a long defensive spell. Goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger did the same as his DEG counterpart and prevented worse. As Dominik Bittner only hit the outside of the net from an acute angle shortly before the end of the second period, the score remained 1-2 from the Red Bulls' point of view.
In the first half of the final period, both goalies hardly had anything to do. In the 51st minute, Filip Varejcka opened the most exciting phase of the final period to date with a farmer's trick, which Haukeland defended against. With Munich in powerplay, Andreas Eder and Markus Eisenschmid tried their luck with shots, but were unsuccessful (55'). A combination between Kastner and Will Butcher also failed to produce the longed-for equalizer (56'). Instead, O'Donnell made it 3:1 (58') from Düsseldorf's perspective - Drake Rymsha sealed the deal with an empty netter to make it 4:1 seconds before the final buzzer.
