Course of the game
Mannheim had the better chances in an eventful opening period, but Mathias Niederberger in the Munich goal and the crossbar prevented the Adler from taking the lead. But the Red Bulls also had their chances in offense. One of them came from Max Daubner, who just missed the goal (15th). Four minutes later, the German champions were unable to capitalize on a double chance from Veit Oswald and Andrew MacWilliam. When everything pointed to a goalless first period, Tyler Gaudet gave the Eagles the lead with a follow-up shot (20').
Mannheim got off to the better start in the middle period and made it 2:0 through Kris Bennett (23'). The Red Bulls then worked on scoring the equalizer, but there was no getting past Arno Tiefensee at first. The Adler goalkeeper made a number of saves, including one against DeSousa when Munich were outnumbered (28). A short time later, Mannheim struck coldly in their own numerical superiority. Bennett was again the scorer (32'). Despite trailing 3-0, coach Söderholm's team tried everything - and were rewarded. Hager reduced the deficit to 1:3 with a powerplay hammer (38'). This was the score going into the second period break.
The Red Bulls carried the momentum into the final period. Mannheim was barely able to break free, but despite top chances the two-goal deficit remained for the time being - also because the post prevented Andreas Eder from scoring the equalizer (43'). Ten minutes later, however, the time had come: DeSousa made it 2:3 with a follow-up shot. After that, it was still a one-goal game. In the final phase, six Munich outfield players pressed for an equalizer, but the third goal never came.
