Gameplay
The Red Bulls went straight into forward gear and were clearly superior in the first period. After several shots on goal by Markus Keller, Ortega dusted off in the 5th minute for 1:0. Allavena was rarely challenged in the Munich box at first, but was on hand when needed. His teammates created several top chances, including a goal against the post by Chris DeSousa (11th). Another period of pressure led to the next goal by Smith. The captain scored with the backhand the 2:0 (15.) - at the same time the score after 20 minutes.
In the middle section, the guests came back with a double strike: Adam Payerl reduced first, before Terry Broadhurst put on 2:2 (25.). Allavena was chance-less with both goals and prevented a little later sensationally the third Augsburger goal by Marcel Barinka (27.). A balanced derby developed with chances on both sides. The best opportunity had the Red Bulls by Ryan McKiernan, for the second time saved the post for AEV goalkeeper Keller (40.).
Munich started with a power play in the final third. Shortly before the expiry of the penalty Eder brought his team with a hard direct shot again in the lead (42.). Augsburg then pressured, aided by two overtime situations. Allavena came into focus and prevented the equalizer with a brilliant save against Payerl (52.). The guests threw everything forward in the final phase, but they did not manage another goal. It remained at 3:2 for Munich.
