The Red Bulls got off to an energetic start in the prestige duel with a 5-0 scoreline in the first three minutes. The visitors from Cologne then managed to make the game, which was characterized by many duels, more balanced. Until the 12th minute: Ortega gave the German champions a 1:0 lead on the counter-attack following Cologne's best chance to date, which was thwarted by Munich goalkeeper Mathias Niederberger. As neither Munich nor Cologne were able to capitalize on their chances after that, the Red Bulls went into the break with a 1-0 lead after a heated first period.

They responded immediately in the same minute with Gregor MacLeod making it 2:2. Both teams then defended with concentration. The fans saw a fierce fight that went into extra time. In the 61st minute, the result was: no goal for Cologne after video evidence. Instead, the decisive goal was scored on the other side. Oswald secured the extra point for EHC Red Bull Munich in the 62nd minute.
