Course of the game
The Red Bulls played an aggressive forecheck and consistent defensive work right from the start, keeping the Polar Bears' offense in check. If the Berliners did get a chance to score, Mathias Niederberger was a reliable back-up. At the other end, Eisbären goalie Jake Hildebrand also kept a clean sheet - until the 13th minute when Hager deflected a shot from Konrad Abeltshauser to make it 1:0. Munich survived Berlin's first powerplay unscathed thanks to their great effort. The narrow lead lasted until the first break.
In the early stages of the middle period, Mathias Niederberger made two strong saves to prevent the equalizer. The Red Bulls' next top chance again came from Hager, who - like Les Lancaster on the follow-up - failed to put the puck in the Berlin goal (29'). Heigl was more successful four minutes later: The youngster remained ice-cold in front of Hildebrand and increased the score to 2:0 with his first DEL goal. Munich was closer to the 3:0 than the Polar Bears to the final goal, but the score did not change before the second break.
The Red Bulls continued their strong performance from the first two periods in the final period. With a few exceptions, Berlin's attacking efforts fizzled out. The Polar Bears increased their risk. When the record champions became more compelling, Munich struck for the third time: Krämmer finished off a remarkable move to make it 3:0 (50'). Berlin then tried everything again and reduced the deficit through Leonhard Pföderl (59). Eisbären coach Serge Aubin then brought on an extra outfield player for Hildebrand, but Kastner scored the last goal of the duel with a shot into an empty net (60') to make the final score 4:1.
