Course of the game
The Red Bulls got off to a lightning start: just 22 seconds had elapsed when Ehliz took precise aim and scored for an early lead. Even after 1:0, Munich continued to play lively forward before Joseph Cramarossa had the Lions' first top chance (5th). Mathias Niederberger reacted brilliantly. In the eleventh minute, however, the German international goalkeeper had no chance against Maksim Matushkin's well-placed shot - 1:1. Afterwards, however, Frankfurt allowed themselves two puck losses, which DeSousa (13) and Ortega (16) punished ice-cold. A fast-paced first period ended with a 3:1 lead for the German champions.
The Lions came out of the locker room full of energy, but the Red Bulls survived the first period of pressure without conceding a goal - and remained ice-cold in the end: Ortega increased the lead to 4:1 with his second goal of the evening (27'). Frankfurt coach Franz-David Fritzmeier then changed the goalkeeper and brought on Marvin Cüpper for Julius Hudacek. The game continued to go back and forth, with both teams exchanging wild blows and scoring further goals. Julian Napravnik first reduced the deficit for Frankfurt (34'), but the Red Bulls replied just 50 seconds later through Blum (35'). The final goal in this period was scored by Lions defender Markus Lauridsen to make it 3:5 (36').
Both teams continued to look for the way forward in the final period. Despite chances on both sides, the score did not change at first. The Lions upped the tempo in the final minutes, while the Red Bulls defended very compactly and with great concentration. Frankfurt reduced the deficit once more with a sixth player, but Nathan Burns' final goal one second before the end of the game came too late.
