Course of the match
Following the tragic death of Tobias Eder, there was a minute's silence in honor of the former Munich forward immediately before the start of the game. The game then started with two early penalties. First it was the Red Bulls, then the visitors. Munich survived the short-handed situation unscathed and then took advantage of their own chance in superior numbers with a hard and well-placed direct shot from Eisenschmid to make it 1:0 (4th). An evenly-matched duel developed with top-class opportunities. Bremerhaven's Rayan Bettahar capitalized on one of them to make it 1:1 (12'). Further goals before the first break were prevented by the brilliant goalkeepers Mathias Niederberger and Kristers Gudlevskis.
After the break, Bremerhaven were initially in control, but despite their visual superiority, the visitors failed to create any major chances. It was a different story for the Red Bulls, but Hirose (34') and shortly afterwards Yasin Ehliz (35') found their master in Gudlevskis. The visitors' goalkeeper was then beaten for the second time shortly before the break: Hirose gave Munich a narrow lead after 40 minutes with his goal to make it 2:1 (39').
Bremerhaven looked for an answer in the final period, but the Red Bulls continued to defend consistently and were also able to rely on their superior possession play on this evening. DeSousa increased the lead to 3:1 with an onetimer in the 50th minute. The Penguins then threw everything forward, but the strong Niederberger was the last man standing. The four-time German champions held on for a 3:1 victory.
