Course of the game
The Red Bulls started the game with a lot of pressure and that's how they managed to score the first goal. With penalty time displayed and six men on the ice, Abeltshauser scored for the 1-0 lead (5th minute of play). According to the new CHL rules, the indicated penalty was not cancelled, so EHC Red Bull München could continue playing in overtime after the goal. But the Innsbruckers managed to equalize through Lukas Bär (6th) despite being outnumbered. According to the new rules, the goal also meant the end of Munich's overtime. The next power play for the Red Bulls followed in the eighth minute: Smith scored the lead again after the puck bounced off the boards back in front of the goal. Shortly before the break, Parkes converted Blum's pass to make the score 3:1 at the break.
The second period started immediately with a double strike for Munich: Nico Krämmer passed perfectly into Ortega's path, who single-handedly shot the puck through the legs of Innsbruck goalie Evan Buitenhuis and into the net (24). 74 seconds later, MacWilliam scored his first CHL goal to make it 5-1 (25). As the game progressed, things got heated between the two teams. The visitors managed to score their second goal midway through the third through Corey Mackin (29th). But the Red Bulls had the direct answer in the following powerplay through Smith, who scored his second goal, to make it 6:2 (30.).
Toni Söderholm's team started the third period in overtime. Smith took advantage of that in the 44th minute for his third goal of the game. In the further course of the final period, there were more chances on both sides. From the 53rd minute, Munich was again on the power play. Ortega converted a pass from Smith to score Munich's eighth goal (53rd). Five minutes before the end of the game, the guests had a 4-on-3 overtime and tested Allavena again. But the final point was finally set by Parkes with his second goal (57th) for the 9:2 victory, at the same time the highest CHL victory in the history of EHC Red Bull München.
