// RECAP
The exciting history behind the Red Bulls Salute
The Red Bulls Salute was born out of the idea of offering fans top-class ice hockey in the summer. The invitational tournament took place for the first time in 2005, with ERC Ingolstadt taking the title. In the years that followed, the format and number of participants changed, but the top-class line-up of top teams from Europe's best leagues remained. From 2010 onwards, the Red Bulls Salute served as the final tournament of the European Trophy, the predecessor of the Champions League.
The Finnish team JYP Jyväskylä won the last edition in 2013. After that, the tournament gave way to the Champions League (CHL). Since 2017, the international invitational tournament has been held again annually in August.
NHL flair thanks to the LA Kings
One of the absolute highlights in the history of the tournament so far was the participation of the Los Angeles Kings. In 2007, the two-time Stanley Cup winners opened the NHL season with a game against the Anaheim Ducks in London.
The Red Bulls Salute served as the ideal preparation for the Los Angeles Kings for the new season. It's no surprise that the Kings won the tournament and thus eternalized themselves in the list of winners.
The tournament
This year, Salzburg will open the Red Bulls Salute on Friday (August 22nd | 4:00 p.m.) with the game against EV Zug. After that, München and Rögle will fight for the second final ticket at 7:30 p.m.
The grand finale of this year's invitational tournament with the two semi-final winners will take place the following day (August 23 | 7:00 p.m.). The third-place playoff will take place at 3:00 p.m.
