Course of the match
Both teams started the host duel with a lot of energy. However, chances were lacking until the sixth minute. Nikolaus Kraus then made his mark with a shot that hit the post of the Munich goal (6th minute). A short time later, Tobias Rieder popped up in front of David Kickert at the other end, but the Salzburg goalkeeper was on the spot. Munich then had more possession of the disc - and that paid off in the 14th minute: Heigl first initiated an attack and then dusted it off himself to make it 1:0. His first goal in an EHC Red Bull München jersey. However, the lead only lasted two minutes, as Peter Schneider gave Mathias Niederberger no chance in the powerplay. The score remained 1:1 until the first break.
Niederberger was called upon early in the middle period. The German international goalkeeper made strong saves, but was unable to prevent Tyler Lewington from making it 1:2 (22'). Munich responded by stepping up the pace. The reward was Oswald's equaliser after Emil Johansson's remarkable assist (27'). However, Vadim Schreiner put the Austrians back in front just two minutes later (29). It now went back and forth. Both teams created chances, but no further goals were scored in the second period.
Munich took control in the final period and created opportunities. A shot from Adam Brooks narrowly missed the angle (44'). Kickert was lucky in this scene. His team-mates made pinpricks, but no further goals were scored at first. The Austrians held on to their narrow lead until the final phase. Söderholm brought on an extra outfield player - to no avail: Luca Auer scored an empty-net goal to make the final score 2:4 (60').
Toni Söderholm: ‘The balance between offence and defence wasn't always perfect. The will to work hard is there. But we're still missing little things.’
