Course of the game
The first few minutes belonged to the attack-minded Grizzlies. Without consequences, because the Red Bulls remained unimpressed and created more and better offensive actions. However, no goals were scored, Munich's goalie Mathias Niederberger and his counterpart Dustin Strahlmeier made excellent saves. And so there was a lot of action on the ice in the fast, intense first period, but none on the ice - 0:0 at the break.
The first goal came in the 23rd minute from a Wolfsburg break by Justin Feser. After that, Munich went on a rampage, including a shot off the post by Patrick Hager (27th), crossbar goals by Koni Abeltshauser (35th) and Ben Smith (36th) and a disallowed goal by Ben Street (40th, high stick). Wolfsburg defended and counterattacked dangerously. There was no more reason for either team to celebrate in the middle period and the Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room for the second time.
The Red Bulls on the hunt for the equalizer, Wolfsburg on the lookout to counterattack. That was the set-up in the final period that led to a 2:0 lead for the hosts. Ryan O'Connor tucked the puck into the Munich goal at the end of a 2-on-1 situation (46'). Coach Toni Söderholm's team continued to have very good chances after that, but Grizzlies keeper Strahlmeier proved to be their master time and time again. With 3:39 minutes remaining, Munich brought on a sixth outfield player - to no avail, the score remained 0:2.
