Course of the game
Munich played fast-paced field hockey in the first period and were rewarded in the fourth minute: Ortega scored after DeSousa's assist to make it 1:0. A short time later, the visitors also had their first high-calibre goal, but Mathias Niederberger reacted brilliantly against Christopher Brown (6th). Joacim Eriksson still had to work a lot harder in the Wild Wings' goal as the Red Bulls kept up the pressure - and made it 2:0 through DeSousa (9'). The champions continued to enjoy the game and had further opportunities. Varejcka capitalized on one of them to make it 3:0 (17'). Then it was time for the break.
It was a similar picture for the fans in the middle period: Munich put the pedal to the metal, often combined well and extended their lead. Abeltshauser scored first to make it 4:0 (22'). Eriksson was then replaced by Cody Brenner, but he too was beaten shortly afterwards. Ortega scored in double overtime to make it 5:0 (26'), before Varejcka also scored a brace just a minute later (27'). After 6:0, the German champions shifted down a gear. The duel was now more open, but Munich remained efficient. Parkes gave them a seven-goal lead after 40 minutes with his goal in the 38th minute.
Schwenningen initially had more shots in the final period, but Munich's Klausi Heigl had the best chance - but Brenner defused the youngster's solo effort (47'). The visitors were then also able to celebrate in the final period. Brown (48'), Thomas Larkin (52') and Boaz Bassen (55') made the result more friendly with their goals, but the Wild Wings could not shake the Red Bulls' deserved success.
