Course of the game
The fans were treated to fast and intense derby ice hockey from the very first minute, as the two Upper Bavarian DEL clubs demanded everything from each other. Ingolstadt were initially a touch more active and had a great chance to take the lead during a double overtime spell, but Daniel Schmölz slammed the puck against the crossbar (9'). Further chances were thwarted by the strong Mathias Niederberger in the Munich goal. His counterpart Michael Garteig also made strong saves, but the ERC goalkeeper was lucky when Taro Hirose hit the crossbar (17'). The teams went into the first break scoreless.
The special teams were also allowed to show off in the middle period. The Red Bulls sent their powerplay players onto the ice in the 23rd minute, but it was the decimated visitors who scored: Austen Keating finished off a counter-attack to make it 0:1 (24'). The Panthers then offered little to Munich's offense and increased the lead to 0:2 themselves in the 31st minute through Alex Breton's direct shot (31.). Shortly before the second period break, the crossbar prevented Ingolstadt from scoring a third goal (40').
Munich looked for a quick answer in the final period, but the Panthers continued to defend consistently. The visitors initially neglected their own attacking play before they struck coldly in superior numbers. Riley Sheen made it 0:3 with Ingolstadt's first shot on goal of the period (48'). The Red Bulls now needed three goals for overtime, so coach Kaltenhauser took the goalkeeper off the ice four minutes before the siren. But even with six outfield players, Garteig could not be beaten. At the other end, Leon Hüttl finally sealed the deal with his empty-net goal to make it 0:4 (60').
