Both teams got off to a calm and structured start, with remarkable attacking actions in short supply at first. Munich's Chris DeSousa had the first big chance after five and a half minutes. The Red Bulls were also closer to scoring than the Adler and took the lead after 18 minutes. Ehliz blocked a Mannheim shot, gave himself the puck, skated in alone on Adler keeper Felix Brückmann and converted with aplomb. The goal was also his 104th DEL goal for the Red Bulls. The striker thus drew level with Michael Wolf in the German champions' all-time scoring list. They went into the first period break with the score at 1:0.

Abeltshauser deflected DeSousa's shot into the Mannheim goal - 4:1 for Munich (46'). After this goal, a very concentrated Red Bulls were no longer in danger and Ortega increased the lead to 5:1 two seconds before the final buzzer.
