Course of the game
The Red Bulls got off to an energetic start in captain Patrick Hager's 400th DEL game in a Munich jersey. Tigers goalkeeper Zane McIntyre quickly took center stage, but prevented the visitors from going behind early. The four-time German champions remained the more active team and continued to play under pressure. The reward was the opening goal by DeSousa, who converted his own rebound to make it 1:0 (15'). Because Simon Wolf shone against Adrian Klein at the other end (17), the team went into the break with this result. There were initially no big chances for either side in the middle period.
That changed in the 25th minute when Markus Eisenschmid appeared free in front of the Straubing goal after a dream pass from Nikolaus Heigl, but was unable to beat McIntyre. A short time later, the visitors put on a lot of pressure with just under four minutes of overtime, but the Red Bulls defended their lead passionately. Munich then took control again - and that paid off in the closing stages of the second period: Lancaster first increased the lead to 2:0 with a follow-up shot (39'), before Hirose made it 3:0 (40') with a spectacular direct shot.
Straubing made an effort to close the gap in the final period. However, the Red Bulls defended consistently, did not allow any high-caliber goals and repeatedly made pinpricks themselves. Straubing threw everything forward in the final minutes, but Wolf remained a strong back-up. The youngster made a spectacular save against Michael Connolly (55'), but was then beaten 33 seconds before the siren: Connolly reduced the deficit for the visitors, but the goal made no difference to the Red Bulls' derby victory.
